The following obituary is being shared as a courtesy to local friends and family of Mr. Alexander. All services have been entrusted to the Cremation Society of Charlotte, NC.
William Gaddy Alexander, age 82, of York, SC, passed away on Sunday, June 14, 2026 with his wife by his side. He was born on January 28, 1944 in Hartsville, SC, son of the late Henry and Susanna Perdue Alexander.
Well known locally for selling fresh produce in the Newport area of Rock Hill, SC for an impressive 32 years, the “Apple Man” or “Mater Man” and his old pickup truck became part of the Newport landscape. He had many loyal customers, and provided not only produce but conversation to many. The family has been overwhelmed by the outpouring of love from this community.
He had many other hobbies and interests throughout his life, including guitar and music, fishing, poker, baseball, writing, and politics. He was an expert pool player, running a pool room in the 1970s and again briefly in the early 90s and earning nicknames such as “The Wizard,” “Will the Thrill,” and “One Shot Willie.”
William is survived by Tammie, his wife of nearly 43 years, his daughter Susanna (Michael) Tirinato, his sons Elisha (Amber) and Daniel Alexander, and his beloved grandchildren Caleb, Robert, and Lily Tirinato, and Archer and Ender Alexander. He is also survived by his brother Bruce Alexander and sister Sheila Alexander, as well as numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers Howard, Tracy, Floyd, and Steve Alexander, and sister Jean Alexander Fowler.
As he was a gifted writer, it seems fitting to conclude with his own lyrics. “Take your good right hand. Place it on my heart. Promise me you’ll care for me though we’re far apart.”
Cards can be sent to 107 Norris Avenue/ York, SC 29745. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Worthy Boys and Girls Camp in his memory (c/o Rock Hill Police Department/ 120 East Black Street/ Rock Hill, South Carolina 29730). The family is planning a memorial service to be held at a later date. Please check back for updates.
The Alexander Family has entrusted arrangements to Cremation Society of Charlotte.
