Shirley Jean King

Shirley King, age 79, of Hartsville, South Carolina, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on September 21, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family members. 

She was a member of New Beginnings where she served as a Sunday school teacher for many years. She was a humble, joyful woman whose faith was at the heart of her life. She never missed an opportunity to mention God to those around her and loved sharing the hope and comfort she found in Him. She loved poetry and was an author of many poems. She found great happiness in the simple blessings of life, especially watching birds. The cardinal held a special place in her heart and was her favorite. She could spend time watching them and appreciating the beauty of God’s creation. 

She was known for her gentle spirit, humble heart, and happiness that she freely shared with others. One of her greatest joys was talking to God through prayer. Her faith was not simply something she spoke about—it was a meaningful part of who she was. She will be remembered for her love of God, her joyful heart, her humility, and the kindness she brought into the lives of those around her. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. 

Shirley is survived by her husband of 59 years, Don Preston King: four children, Don (Vanessa Brigman), Donna King, Maryanne (James) Howle, and Sharon (Jamie) O’Neal. Six grandchildren: Ralph Simmons III, Haley Brumley, Jordan Howle, Justin Howle, Colby O’Neal, and Austin O’Neal. Four great-grandkids: DanniLynn Simmons, Jaxon Brumley, Calley Brumley, and Aiden Brumley. A special place in her heart was held by Tristan Summerford, Cheyanne Summerford, Cameron Clark, Sadie Clark, Gracelynn Harrington, Emily Harrington, and Eleanor Harrington who called her “Mrs. Queen” She also leaves behind four siblings: C.H.Tyner (Pat), Bobby Tyner, Lucille Wint and Betty Sue Griggs.

 Preceded in death by her father and mother Phillip Harrison and Elsie Marion Tyner, a sister Doris Tyner, and a very special nephew, Dale Lewis.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 3:00 pm at the Chapel of Norton Funeral Home, Rev. John Helms will officiate. Burial will be in the Westview Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home and at other times at the residence at 1106 Old Ruby Road, Hartsville, S.C.
