Maxine Mullis Johnson, 71, passed away peacefully on June 10, 2025, at 5:07 a.m. at MUSC in Charleston, South Carolina.
Born on August 15, 1953, in Rockingham, North Carolina, Maxine was the daughter of the late Max Maniway Mullis and Faye Knight Mullis. She was a devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother, caring sister, and faithful friend to many.
Maxine leaves behind her beloved husband of over 53 years, Paul Wesley Johnson, Jr. (“Tinker”); her daughter, Trina (Lee) Newsome; her cherished grandchildren, Jake and Bryce Newsome; her dear sister, Linda Mullis; and her treasured four-legged grandbaby, Ellie.
Maxine dedicated her life to caring for others, both personally and professionally. She retired in 2018 after a long and impactful career of more than 40 years in the healthcare field as a nurse. Her selfless nature and deep love for her family were evident in all she did—always putting others before herself. She especially took great joy in caring for her sister and spending time with her grandchildren.
Known for her big, beautiful smile, Maxine radiated warmth and kindness wherever she went. Her presence lit up every room, and her gentle spirit left a lasting impact on all who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her two brothers, Ronnie and Keith Mullis.
A Celebration of Maxine's life will be held 2:00pm Friday, June 13, 2025 at Whispering Pines Baptist Church. Pastor Kitral Benton and Pastor John Helms will officiate, directed by Norton Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Magnolia Cemetery. Visitation will be held Thursday, 5:00-7:00pm at Norton Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to a charity of one’s choice in Maxine’s honor.
Her family finds comfort in the words of Scripture, especially Romans 5:1–11 (KJV).
