With heavy hearts, we regretfully announce to you the passing of Mrs. Linda Gayle Newsom. Gayle went home to be with The Lord and rejoin family in Heaven on Thursday evening, January 15th, 2026, while surrounded by her family at Carolina Pines RMC. She was 82 years old.
A native and lifelong resident of Lee County, Mrs. Newsom was a daughter of the late Robert & Thelma Dority Galloway. When remembering Gayle, her family fondly remembers her being an amazing mother. She raised her children and grandchildren with pride. Each Sunday, she cooked for her family and was truly an amazing “Mama Gayle” and “GG.” She worked with her late husband, Charlie, on the farm. Her daughters always told her she missed her calling in not being a Private Investigator, because you couldn’t hide anything from her.
Surviving to cherish her amazing memory are her children, Charlene (Brian) King of McBee and Jennifer (Chad) Cottingham of Lynchburg; grandchildren: Jessica Young, Lewis Young, Jenna Cottingham, Cade Cottingham, Ansley King, and Landon King; sister, Jackie Baker; and very special nephew, Bruce McCathern. Also surviving are nephews: Andy, Jeffery, and Martin.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Charles “Charlie” Newsom; daughter, Gwen Newsom; infant son, Clarence Lever Newsom; sister, Jane McCathern; and brother-in-law’s, Buddy Baker and Irving McCathern.
Her funeral service will be conducted at 3 o’clock on Tuesday afternoon, January 20th, 2026, from St. Matthew Christian Church. Reverend Champ Squires will officiate with a committal following in the church cemetery. The family will be receiving friends Monday evening, from 5-7 at Norton Funeral Home in Bishopville. The family will also be receiving friends beginning at 1 o’clock on Saturday afternoon, January 17th, 2026, at the home of Bruce McCathern, 616 Law St., Bishopville.
Flowers are appreciated or memorials may be made to St. Matthew Christian Church at 2144 Stokes Bridge Road West, Bishopville, SC 29010 or B.A.R.K. at 158 Johnson Pond Rd., Bishopville, SC 29010.
