Jo Ann Johnson Atkinson

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Jo Ann Johnson Atkinson at the age of 90. Mrs. Atkinson passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 29, 2026, at the McLeod Hospice House in Florence, SC.

Born in Hartsville, SC, she was the daughter of the late Cornelius English Johnson and Mary Claire McLean Johnson. A dedicated member of New Market United Methodist Church, she was also a cherished voice in the church choir for many years. Mrs. Atkinson devoted her career to the Darlington County Council on Aging until her retirement.

She is remembered with love by her granddaughter, Michelle Atkinson Winburn (Jason); her great-grandchildren, Lacey Marie Moore, Richard Michael Moore, Catherine JoAnn Moore, and Gracelyn Eden Winburn; her niece, Kathi Johnson; and special family friends, Harden and Deborah Gainey. She was predeceased by her parents and beloved son, Michael C. Atkinson.

A service of remembrance will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday at New Market United Methodist Church, followed by interment in the church cemetery, under the direction of Norton Funeral Home. Revs. Corinthia Mack and Cliff Leonard will officiate. Visitation will begin an hour prior to the service at the church.
