Jessie Deleslie Gibson, Sr.

Jessie Deleslie Gibson, a cherished member of the Hartsville community and a retired veteran of Sonoco Products, passed away peacefully on March 22, 2026, at his residence. Born in Hartsville, South Carolina, on March 12, 1938, Mr. Gibson lived a life marked by dedication to his family, his faith, and his country.

A proud graduate of Hartsville High School, Jessie’s commitment to service extended beyond his early education. He was a Navy veteran, serving honorably and during his time in Spain, he met his beloved wife, Rosario Perez Gibson. His military service was a source of great pride, reflecting his devotion and courage.

Following his military career, Jessie devoted many years to his work at Sonoco Products, from which he retired with distinction. He was also a valued member of the Old Timers Club, a testament to his long-standing ties to the local community and the respect he earned throughout his life.

Jessie was a devoted member of the Hartsville First Baptist Church, where his faith was a guiding light. He found joy in the simple pleasures of life—hunting, fishing, and the serene beauty of the countryside. His love for the outdoors was complemented by fond memories of spending precious time with his cousins and siblings during their childhood. He also enjoyed the unique hobby of searching for arrowheads, a quiet pursuit that connected him with history and nature.

His legacy is lovingly carried on by his daughters, Angela (Chip) Upchurch of Walterboro and Eva Gibson of Hartsville. He was a proud grandfather to six grandchildren: Ashley (Payton), Clark, Jay (Brittany) Gibson, III, Jessica Upchurch, Joanna (Jack) Repass, Hampton Upchurch, and Riley Gibson. His love extended warmly to four great-grandchildren, J.D. Gibson, IV, Everett Gibson, Amelia Barnette, and Kalub Clark, who bring comfort and joy to his family's continuing story.

Jessie was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Rosario Perez Gibson; his son, Jessie D. Gibson, Jr.; daughter-in-law, Crystal Gibson; his brother, Edwin (Buddy) Gibson; and sister, Mary Helen Joyner. He was also preceded by his parents, the late Edwin Lee Gibson and Mary Ella Brand Gibson.
