James Haney

Hartsville, S.C. Funeral services for James Howard Haney age 90, who passed away April 23, will be held Thursday at 11:00 am at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Presiding will be Bishop Mark Ensign and President Cliff Barfield . Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery directed by Norton Funeral Home. Visitation will be Wednesday 5-7 pm at the Funeral Home. Mr. Haney was born in Darlington a son of the late George & Girlie Spells Haney. He was retired from Sonoco Products Company after 39 years of service, was a member of Old Timers Club and after retirement worked at Clanton Auto Auction for several years. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, where he was a High Priest and held various leadership positions. Mr. Haney was a World War II Veteran having served in the US Army, 30th Infantry Division, 117th Infantry Division, Company G. They landed on the beaches of Normandy in July 1944 and entered into battlefield at St. Lo. From there they fought battles in Northern France, Ardenne, Alsace, Rhineland, Central Europe, Mortain, Belgium, Netherlands, Battle of the Bulge, and ended with the capturing of the City of Magdeburg, Germany, where they met the Russians at the Elbe River in May 1945. He was a machine gunner and received a Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Belgian Fourragere, American Campaign Medal, Army of Occupation Medal with Germany, and European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal. Surviving are his wife of 70 years, Martha Andrews Haney, Hartsville; daughter, Martha Jean Haney (William Larry) Barr, Newberry; son, Dr. Howard Wayne Haney, Darlington; granddaughters, Tara B. (Larry) Stephens, Timmonsville, Andrea B. (David) White, Greenwood; Great Grandchildren, Caleb, Hunter, Ethan & Brody White, Greenwood; sister, Arow Brumble, Winston Salem, N.C.
