Hartsville, S.C.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mr. Gary Wayne Adams, age 82. Mr. Adams passed away September 12, 2026 while at Carolina Pines RMC.

Born in Longview, Texas, Gary was the youngest of six children. From an early age, he developed the values that would guide him throughout his life: hard work, humility, perseverance, and an unwavering devotion to those he loved. While Gary faced many challenges in life, he did so with grit, determination and faith. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War and later in the National Guard. His military service reflected the quiet sense of duty, patriotism, and integrity that defined the man he was. Gary was saved at a young age in Longview, Texas and was active in church as a teacher, treasurer, and other capacities.

Gary shared 58 wonderful years of marriage with the love of his life, Mary “Immie Jay” (Kelley) Adams. Together, they built a life rooted in faith, love, and family. Through every joy and every challenge, they stood side by side, creating a home filled with laughter and countless cherished memories. His love for Mary was evident to everyone who knew them, and their enduring partnership is an inspiration to many.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Mary; his sons, Bryan (Katie) and Allen (Lisa); his cherished grandchildren, Ashleigh, Matthew, and Caleb; his treasured great-granddaughter, Tillman; his special neighbors, Virginia and Clif Wilson; and his niece, Tammy.

Gary was preceded in death by his mother, Opal Adams; his father, Gary Osbin Adams; his stepfather, Gus Allen; and his siblings, Jimmy, Billy, Barbara "Bobbi," Wanda, and Patsy. The living family is comforted that he’s reunited with his departed loved ones again.

Following his military service, Gary dedicated 38 years of his career to Sonoco, where he retired from the Research and Development Pilot Plant. He was respected for being trustworthy and admired by coworkers for his reliability, practical knowledge, and strong work ethic. More importantly, he was known as someone people could count on, both in the workplace and in life.

Gary found joy in life's simple pleasures. He loved watching classic Westerns, cheering on the Dallas Cowboys, spending time on the water with a fishing pole in hand, and gathering with family and friends. His quiet strength, gentle spirit, and sense of humor left a lasting impression on everyone blessed to know him.

Gary's legacy lives on in the family he loved deeply, the values he passed on, and the countless memories he leaves behind. Though he will be profoundly missed, his love, guidance, and Christian example will remain in the hearts of those who knew him forever.

A graveside service will be held Friday September 18, 2026 at 11:00 am at Magnolia Cemetery with military honors. Rev. Jim Murray and Rev. Jennings Oneil will officiate. Family will receive friends following the graveside service.

As Gary would often say to his grandchildren, "See you later, alligator." And to him, they’d lovingly reply, "After while, crocodile."

Norton Funeral Home and Crematory is honored to serve the Adams family.
