Mrs. Edna Geneva McQuaig Melton, age 98 went to her heavenly home on June 18 at her residence with her loving family at her bedside. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 3:00 at the Lakeview Baptist Church. Rev. Ken Hughes will officiate. Burial will be in the Mechanicsville Baptist Church Cemetery in Darlington directed by Norton Funeral Home. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church and the family will be accepting visitors at the residence at 1025 Wellington Drive, Hartsville.
Mrs. Melton was born in Darlington a daughter of the late Clem Edward McQuaig, Sr. and Mamie Moody McQuaig.. She attended Darlington County Schools until her marriage to John Wesley Melton, Sr. in 1940. She worked for Darlington Textile until they moved to Michigan in 1955. She went to work for Michigan Public Schools in 1967. She attended school at night and earned her diploma. She also sold Avon and was known as “The Avon Queen”. She retired in 1986 and moved back to South Carolina. She volunteered for Meals on Wheels. She loved to cook for others, especially fruit cakes. She loved flowers, plants, and shopping, especially at Dollar Tree and Roses. She was a member of Lakeview Baptist Church.
Surviving are one son, John Wesley Melton, Jr., Hartsville; two daughters, Mamie (Dennis) Richmond, Port St. Lucie, Florida and Joy (Kenny) Gandy, Society Hill. She was blessed with 8 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; special friends, companions and caregiver, Daisy Allen and Gay Rose. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, John Wesley Melton, Sr.; one brother, Clem Edward McQuaig, Jr., one sister, Elma Coleman; one grandson, Jeff Saylor; one daughter in law, Jane Melton.
