On May 12, 2026, David Truesdell Stephens “Duffy” left his earthly home, surrounded by his devoted wife and loving daughters, and awoke celebrating in Heaven.

Born in Bethune, he was the fourth child of John David “Jack” and Frances Ingram Stephens. From the start, he was doted on by his three older sisters, who spoiled him with love, attention, and plenty of wagon rides to lull him to sleep. He adored them just as deeply, carrying that bond throughout his life. And he enjoyed being spoiled so much that he went on to create three daughters of his own to continue the spoiling. Duffy and Linda met and married in 1967, beginning a 58+ year partnership rooted in loyalty, grit, and a quiet but steady devotion. Over the next fifteen years, they welcomed three strong‑willed, independent daughters who inherited their father’s stubbornness, his work ethic, and his deep love for family.

A man of few words, Duffy didn’t speak often — but when he did, everyone listened. He taught his girls the value of timeliness, respect, hard work, and the sacredness of family meals, which were never complete without rice, gravy, and Linda’s biscuits. An avid deer hunter, Duffy shared his love and knowledge of hunting and firearms with his daughters and with Linda, turning it into a family pastime rather than a solitary hobby.

For more than 35 years, “Snakeman” crisscrossed the country in his 18‑wheeler, returning home with treasures for his best gal, Linda. The grandkids could hardly contain their excitement when “Papa Duff” turned the corner — home at last — bringing treats, stories, and the irresistible chance to toot the horn.

In retirement, Duffy and Linda embraced the freedom they had earned. With the wind in their faces and the road stretching ahead, they filled their saddlebags — and their hearts — with memories from countless motorcycle adventures, including the legendary Tail of the Dragon. When they weren’t riding, they were soaking up the sun on cruises or cheering on their grandkids at ballgames, school programs, and every milestone in between.

David is survived by his wife, Linda Sowell Stephens, and their three daughters: Vanessa S. Dixon, Heather S. Brown (Ray), and Amanda S. Earle. He was the proud Papa of Steven Dixon (Melissa), Brooke Wellman, Jayden Earle, Bryson Graves, Sara Earle, Noah Brown, and Karalyne Brown. His joy multiplied with the arrival of his great‑granddaughter, Arabella Wellman. He also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews who loved him dearly.David is also survived by his sisters Margie Knight (Kenneth) and Betty Jarvi, and by his “baby brother,” Rip Stephens (Marsha). He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Frances Stephens; his sister, Ellen Brown; and his brothers‑in‑law, Howard Brown and Bob Jarvi.
