This obituary is posted as a courtesy to local family and friends.  Arrangements are being handled by Miller-River-Caulder Funeral Home in Chesterfield.  We extend our heartfelt condolences to the Middleton family.

It is with great sadness that the family marks the passing of Charlotte Fields Middleton. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, December 23, 2025 at Macedonia Baptist Church, Jefferson, SC. The Reverend David James Sanders and Reverend John Helms will officiate. Interment will be in the church cemetery. The family will greet friends from 1:00 – 2:00 PM Tuesday, prior to the service at the church, and other times at the family home.

Charlotte left her earthly cares behind and joined her beloved husband, Hugh Canty Middleton on December 19, 2025 at The Sherrills Ford Hospice House, Sherrills Ford, NC. She was born in Chesterfield County, near McBee, SC, daughter of the late Cohen McGraph Fields & Dora McDonald Fields, and stepdaughter of the late Lillye King Brown Fields. Hugh predeceased her on August 23, 1973. Also predeceasing her were; sisters, Faye Fields Rogers, Janie Fields Bruce & Sarah Fields Kelley; brother, James Payton Fields, Sr.; and stepsisters, Eleanor Brown Gardner Hays and Elizabeth Brown Jones.

Charlotte once stated to her girls, “My row is getting shorter.” As mortals, we have been blessed with Christ’s assurance that at the end of our rows, cherished family members will be waiting to greet us. What a day of rejoicing that will be!

Shaped by the Great Depression and World War II, she believed hard work and frugality defined oneself: in truth, she could work your socks off, and mend them good as new! In her words, “Do your work first; then sit down.” As members of the Greatest Generation and the Silent Generation, Hugh and Charlotte instilled in their girls an abiding appreciation for work, thrift, courtesy, and loyalty. They taught conservation before it was stylish. Full of spunk, strong spirited, and a firm believer in order & discipline, she was ready to go as soon as her feet hit the floor! She cared for sickly relatives (sometimes the only one keeping vigil by the bedside).

Charlotte was a dignified, active woman who possessed immense fortitude – a beautiful Southern Belle. Her interests were cross-stitching, sewing, fruit & vegetable preservation, and yard work. Her special talent was the fine art of cleaning (a spinster aunt, Alice McDonald, had meticulously taught her this skill). If deemed necessary, she never hesitated to help one clean! Her advice for unexpected company was, “Bake a cake, cook a roast, and clean the house.”

In the 1940’s, Charlotte worked as one of the original switchboard operators for Southern Bell in Hartsville, SC. She retired from the Chesterfield County School System after years of dedicated service at McBee High School. In her youth, she enjoyed square dancing with her fun-loving Hugh. She found pleasure in reading, walking, birds, puzzles, and tending to her loved ones. Unbeknownst to many, Charlotte delighted in prankish behavior, and played numerous practical jokes on those closest to her.

She will be remembered as a loyal mother who maintained a warm, secure household. In fact, she was the rock-steady grounding force of the family, the linchpin that kept them together. As hardware holds a gate to a fence yet still allows for in & outs, she shouldered the weight of change while providing protection. Upholding patience in her devotion to her girls, she put up with them and loved them anyway. They believed in her with respect, adoration, and pride. Mama will live in their hearts forever: for as long as she is there, she will give them comfort!

As an active and longtime member of Macedonia Baptist Church, Charlotte’s faithfulness, integrity, and work ethics provided a model of personal conduct that will continue to guide us. The Lord showed grace when he bestowed up her such a wonderful life, and shared her with everyone!

Charlotte lived independently until the age of 99. After she relocated to her daughter Tammy’s home, friends and family traveled near and far to celebrate her 100th birthday. It was such a joyous occasion because she loved, cherished, and appreciated everyone!

Surviving to honor her memory with love and gratitude are; daughters (in-law), Tammy Middleton (Maxy, Jr.) Wolfe of Gastonia, NC, Charlene Middleton Hill of Bessemer City, NC, Ann Middleton (Mick) Sigmon of Sherrills Ford, NC; grandchildren, Taylor (Alex) Lewis of Lillington, NC, Max III (Becky) Wolfe of Indian Trail, NC, Brick (Neely) Hill of Kings Mountain, NC, Zackary (Jessica) Hill of Gastonia, NC, Grant Sigmon of Sherrills Ford, NC, Rhett (Stephanie) Sigmon of Aurora, CO, Amanda (Nate) VanderWoude of Auburn, AL; great grandchildren, Atlas Lewis, Liam Wolfe, Harper & Rowyn Hill, Hadley & Leighton Hill, Caden, Chase, & Cohen Sigmon, Ethan & Lily Hope VanderWoude; a host of nieces and nephews; and other close relatives and friends.

The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to daughters of the heart, Shauna Newell & Janitt Smith; and special friends, Beverly Raley and Marty McCaskill for their love, friendship, and support over the years.
