It is with sad hearts that we announce the death of Mrs. Bonnie McCoy McDowell age 78 who passed away January 6, 2026, while at Prisma Health Richland Hospital in Columbia.
Bonnie was born in Bishopville a daughter of the late George and Ella Mae Huggins Gladden
Funeral services will be held Sunday January 11, 2026 at 3:00 pm at the Union Methodist Church, 4374 Union Church Road, McBee, S.C. Rev. Charlie Short will officiate. Burial will be in the Union Methodist Church Cemetery directed by Norton Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 2:00 -3:00 pm at the church.
Bonnie graduated from high school and went on to pursue the work she felt called to do—caring for others. She continued her education to become a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), building a career that spanned more than 30 years. She served faithfully at Byerly Hospital and Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center, doing what she loved most: helping people with compassion, strength, and steady dedication.
Above all, Bonnie loved her family. She made the most of every moment together—always ready to laugh, to share a story, and to bring a smile to everyone around her. Her laughter was contagious, and her presence had a way of making people feel at home. She had a deep love for music and singing, especially the songs of her favorite band, Journey—music that so perfectly matched the joy she carried in her heart.
Bonnie was preceded in death by her mother, Elaine Mae Gladden; her father, George Gladden; her brothers and sisters, Eva, Heyward, Loran, George “Tut” Gladden, and Geraldene Bransford; and her granddaughter, Sherry Gainey.
She is survived by her children, Drinda Couillard (James Couillard) and Tammy Johnson (Henry Johnson); and her grandchildren, Jessica Withrow, Katherine Segal (Mark Segal), Scarlett Couillard, and Dustin Gainey. Bonnie is also survived by eight great-grandchildren: Tyler, Conner, Chandler, Kirsten, Bailey, Maci, Camren, and McKenzie.
Bonnie’s legacy is one of service, laughter, and love—an enduring reminder that the simplest gifts, given wholeheartedly, can leave the greatest impact.
Bonnie’s love and laughter will live on in the hearts of all who knew her, and her memory will continue to bring comfort, smiles, and strength to those she leaves behind.
Norton Funeral Home and Crematory is honored to serve the McDowell family.
