Alice B Hulsey

Alice Brenneman Hulsey, 85, went to be with the Lord on Friday, October 30, 2026.

Alice was a devoted and loving wife, mother, and grandmother who gave so much of her time, energy, and heart to her loved ones. Her family was her greatest treasure, and caring for those she loved was always at the center of her life.

A native of Franklin, Pennsylvania, Alice lived a life filled with love and laughter. She married George “Chip” Herman Hulsey, her brother’s friend whom he had met while serving in the military. Although Alice and George had only met once, during a brief visit when George came to see her family while on a two-week leave, they fell in love through more than a year of letters exchanged while George was deployed overseas. Their love story was truly special!

Alice earned her bachelor's degree in early childhood education from Clarion University in Pennsylvania and dedicated 30 years of her life to educating and inspiring young people. She primarily taught fourth grade at North Hartsville Elementary School. Throughout the years, many of her former students have shared how deeply she impacted their lives. She had a special gift for believing in people, especially those who may not have had anyone else believing in them.

Just weeks ago, one former student shared an especially touching story. With tears in his eyes, he explained that Mrs. Hulsey saw potential in him when no one else did. Her encouragement inspired him to work hard, better his life, and ultimately become a preacher. That was the kind of teacher Alice was. She made her students feel seen, valued, and capable of achieving more than they ever imagined. Her influence will live on through the countless lives she touched.

Outside of teaching, Alice was an avid reader, a talented seamstress, quilter, and knitter. She made countless dolls and dresses for her daughter, putting love and care into everything she created. Those creations were more than clothing or crafts; they were tangible expressions of the love she had for her family.

Alice was preceded in death by her beloved husband, George Hulsey, who shared 36 years of marriage with her before his passing, and her loving sister, Doris Sorenson.

Left to cherish her memory are her loving daughter, Suzie (Randell) Ewing; her grandson, Clay Ewing; her beloved brother, Daniel “Bud” (Jayne) Brenneman; and her sister, Faye (Basil) Gedz; along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear loved ones.

May Alice now rest in peace. May those who mourn her find comfort in knowing that the love she so freely gave will never truly leave us.

A private funeral service officiated by Pastor James Robbins of Hartsville Presbyterian Church was held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, November 2, 2026, in Darlington County, South Carolina, directed by Norton Funeral Home.

Norton Funeral Home and Crematory is honored to serve the Hulsey family.
