Myrtle Outlaw Luther

April 22, 1926 ~ May 14, 2018 (age 92)

Hartsville, SC

The sun set on May 14th 2018 and Myrtle Lee Outlaw Luther stepped into the presence of her loving Savior and Lord.  Mrs. Luther was 92 the widow of Russell Luther, Sr.

Myrtle was a loving daughter, devoted sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend.  She will be remembered as a servant of our Lord and a memorable role model for those who knew her.  She was a charter member of First Baptist Church of Pine Ridge and served a church secretary, treasurer and choir director for over 30 years.  In the years after her husband, Russell’s death, Myrtle worshipped with West Hartsville Baptist Church family.

Myrtle attended the USC Business School and was the first SC Municipal Clerk to graduate from the International Institute of Municipal Clerks.  She retired as the first female City Clerk and Finance Director for Hartsville, SC.

Myrtle was a long time member of the Order of the Eastern Star prior to her illness. 

Surviving are her children, Russell (Booper) Luther, Jr., Deborah L. Watson (Rick) and Jennifer L. Dewitt; grandchildren, Thomas A. Luther (Alisha), Tyler J. Luther (Stephanie), Jed D. Watson, Joshua B. Watson, Kacee D. Purvis (Jason) and Jenna R. Dewitt; great grandchildren, Wade Luther, Isabella Luther, Zion Hammock, Wyatt Purvis and Leah Purvis.

The family would like to express special thanks to those who cared with compassion for Mrs. Luther:  Morrell Nursing Home and McLeod Hospice.

A Celebration of Life will take place on Friday at 11:00am at West Hartsville Baptist Church.  Rev. Mark Outlaw, Rev. Dr. Kevin Walters and Chaplain Thomas R. Watson, CHC-USNR will officiate, burial in Magnolia Cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home.  Visitation will be held one hour prior to the services at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the West Hartsville Baptist Church, 1003 West Carolina Avenue, Hartsville, SC 29550, First Baptist Church of Pine Ridge, 3901 West Bobo Newsom Highway, Hartsville, SC 29550, McLeod Hospice, 1203 East Cheves Street, Florence, SC 29506.
